Several groups have recent ly repor ted the existence of a popu la t i on of h u m a n T cells capab le of p ro l i fe ra t ing in response to signals from autologous, non-T, mononuclear cells (1-4). As the s t imula to r cells have not been purpose ly modif ied, this pro l i fe ra t ion m a y represent recogni t ion of una l t e red self de te rminants . In this report , we have inves t iga ted the specifici ty a n d funct ion of this autologous, react ive T cell (ARC).1 T h e d a t a indica te tha t the A R C is: (a) ac t iva ted by produc ts of genes closely l inked to the H L A D R locus of the ma jo r h i s tocompa t ib i l i ty complex (MHC) , and (b) requi red for the synthesis of subs tan t ia l amoun t s of Ig by autologous B cells. This suggests tha t the A R C is a he lper cell capab le of recognizing self M H C de te rminants .
